What To Expect From Cowes Week

Each year, the village of Cowes in the Isle of Wight welcomes over 1,000 boats and over 8,000 competitors to be a part of Cowes Week. Bought together by their love of sailing, people descend on this part of the world to compete, socialise, and generally be a part of one of the longest running regattas in the world.


Where to stay at Cowes week?

With over 100,000 spectators visiting the event, which takes place at the start of August, accommodation fills up pretty quickly. Luckily, there are a few different options – from B&Bs in town to private house rentals and camping in the surrounding area.

For something a little different, glamping set-ups like the plush Pop Up Hotel offer a great in between options – all of the convenience of camping but with a much-appreciated hint of luxury.


What to do at Cowes Week?

During Cowes week, around 40 races take place each day in varying levels of ability, so whether taking part or simply observing, you’re not short of options. As some of the most spectacular yachts in the country come together, the Solent becomes a sight to behold.

Away from the regatta, Cowes is a lovely place to explore, with its quaint shops and plenty of places to eat and drink. As Cowes Week brings in the crowds, the town puts on a show, rounding off the event with a famous Friday night firework display.

The History Of The Solent

The Solent is the area of water separating the Isle of Wight from mainland England.  Originally a valley through which the Solent River flowed, it has increased in size over many years to be the recreational playground we now know it to be.

Nowadays the Solent is known for Yacht hire and sailing escapades, with many Sailing & Yachting events taking place throughout the year including Cowes Weeks.  It’s a hotspot for Corporate Entertainment and celebrations alike, and boasts some of the busiest harbours in the country.

The Mary Rose

Henry VIII’s flagship vessel the Mary Rose was lost in The Solent in 1545 during a naval battle between England & France.  The vessel has since been lifted from the seabed in 1982 and has been restored in Portsmouth.

The Titanic

The iconic ship set sail from Southampton in April 1912 to sadly never return. Having been deemed ‘unsinkable’ the vessel hit an iceberg and with not enough lifeboats to accommodate all 2,224 passengers, only 710 survived.

The Royal Navy

Almost two-thirds of the Royal Navy’s surface fleet are housed around The Solent, along with many of their historical ships.  There are a number of museums where you can see the historic vessels including Nelson’s flagship, HMS Victory, the world’s oldest surviving commissioned ship, which sailed in the Battle of Trafalagar in 1805.

The Tudors & Cowes Week

West Cowes Castle was built in 1539 as part of Henry VIII’s defence against the French. Today it’s the headquarters of the Royal Yacht Squadron and the 22 guns lining its esplanade are used to start Cowes Week.  Believe it or not, these guns actually came from William IV’s vessel, The Adelaide.

Victoria & Albert

Osborne House in East Cowes was once the country home of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.  Queen Victoria passed away there in 1901 and since many of the rooms have been opened up to the public.

Established back in 1205, the Lymington Charter Market is a traditional gathering that takes place every Saturday from 8am til late. Over 90 stalls line the high street offering anything from ornate antique pieces to freshly arranged flowers. Plenty of food and drink outlets are available to fuel the happy shoppers, with traditional farm stalls also offering delightful delicacies to take home. For bargain hunters and fussy shoppers alike, Lymington Market is a wonderfully characterful way to see what the town has to offer.

Securing a new client for your business and making your company stand is difficult with so much competition. However, a round of golf or dinner and a show simply isn’t enough to wow them, and business development executives are finding it harder to get ahead of their competitors.

That’s why in this blog, we talk about three tricks and tips to help you impress your potential client with first-class corporate hospitality that wows them and gives you the opportunity pitch to them.

Don’t Just Know Your Stuff, Know Their Stuff as Well

Whether this is a piece of wisdom or a piece of common sense, it is not enough for you to know your stuff and what your business is about, you need to know about your potential client. It is simple but, with more you know about them, it will give you an edge and a foot in the door.

A good area to focus on is their competitors and how they conduct their business, what are they doing better than your potential client and how can you help them. This could be through your products or services or just generally if you spot something they might be interested in knowing. Besides helping you pitch more decisively, it puts you in their good books, knowing that you are out to help them get ahead of their competitors.

Also, if you’re hoping to replace a product or service with your own, it is ideal to know who are you competing against. For an example, let’s use a printing press and you are trying to replace yours with them, you did to ask yourself:

  • What problems would they face?
  • Would they have problems with maintenance?
  • What are the pain points that your machine can solve?

It is more professional and beneficial for you to go into that meeting, where you already know what gives that person headaches first thing on a Monday and how you can take them away.

Choose Neutral Ground That Impresses Them & Gives you an Edge

Just like in sports, you want to play home rather than away. Playing at home gives you a firm advantage when it comes to pitching; you have better control of your environment and it is easier for you to dictate the meeting, the conversation. However, your potential client knows this and, like going to an away game, they are going to be very apprehensive and be very closed up. This is not ideal for when you to go in pitching, it makes it a lot more difficult for you to open them up and begin a proper conversation. Obviously, you don’t want to go in their offices and play away.

So the obvious compromise is to pick a neutral playing ground but you want to get an edge. That’s why we say, pick neutral ground that wows and impresses your potential client, that’s an amazing edge to have.
